He was a soldier of the Praetorian Guard under Emperor Maximian. Discovered as a Christian he refused to recant his faith. Divine Office | The Eucharist, pledge of our resurrection

In today's Office of Readings we encounter a reading from the treatise "Against the Heresies" by St. Irenaeus (ca. 130 - 202 A.D.) Whenever we take up a Bible we touch Irenaeus’s work, for he played a decisive role in fixing the canon of the New Testament. It is easy for people nowadays to think of Scripture – and the New Testament in particular – as the basis of the Church, but harder to remember that it was the Church itself that had to agree, early on, about what was scriptural and what was not. She was struck by the cultural, moral, and spiritual poverty of the young women of her day, and their lack of basic Christian formation. This inspired her to begin a school for their instruction and human formation, which became Italy's first public school for girls.

Saints Alive! | Saint François de Laval

Born into an illustrious family, Saint François de Laval walked away from a life of wealth in order to dedicate his life to the service of the Lord. He was ordained a bishop and became the first bishop of New France, later to become Canada. He founded a seminary and had schools and churches built. He resigned his bishopric in 1684 but remained in New France and acted as deputy to his successor. He was canonized by Pope Francis on 3 April 2014.
