Pieter Lastman, The crucifixion, 1616, Museum het Rembrandthuis. The painting depicts Christ’s crucifixion at Golgotha, the ‘Place of the Skulls’ outside Jerusalem. The two criminals are crucified on either side of Christ. Mary and St John stand by the cross, while Mary Magdalene kneels at its foot. Another Mary, the wife of Clopas, lies overwhelmed with grief in the arms of an old woman. Behind them soldiers cast lots for Christ’s garments (John 19: 17-30). There are four known crucifixions by Lastman. This painting is the most monumental of the four.

In his encyclical letter, Ecclesia de Eucharistia, Pope John Paul II wrote, “The agony in Gethsemane was the introduction to the agony of the Cross on Good Friday. The holy hour, the hour of the redemption of the world.”

Today is Good Friday, the most solemn day on the Christian calendar. Like St. Paul, today we proclaim Christ crucified (cf. 1 Cor 1:23).

Good Friday

On the Friday of the Lord’s Passion (Good Friday) the Church commemorates the death of Jesus Christ on the Cross for the sins of all mankind, at the same time the Passover lamb was being killed and prepared for consumption among the Jewish people. On this day the Church does not celebrate Mass. The main altar remains completely bare, and the Tabernacle is empty. It is at the 3 o’clock hour on Good Friday that Jesus expired on the Cross, His Divine Mercy being poured out on the whole world. At this hour the Christian faithful should observe a solemn and prayerful silence in memory of the hour in which our salvation was won at so great a price.
