St. Teresa of Avila (1515–1582), also known as St. Teresa of Jesus, was born in Spain to a large, devout, and prominent Catholic family. She entered religious life as a Carmelite nun. She wrote much on the subject of contemplative prayer and her writings are still standard works today. She was declared the first female Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI.
