A humble man of God, Alphonsus Rodriguez was admitted to the Society of Jesus after a long delay and many hardships he experienced earlier in his life. After the loss of his wife in childbirth, and the loss of his own mother, and that of his three children, its no wonder Alphonsus developed a life of prayer, intense piety, and of rigorous penances.
